Rudd ponders head-to-head with Gillard

Kevin Rudd's supporters are banking on him dropping his demand he would accept the Labor leadership only if drafted, in favour of a head-to-head ballot with Julia Gillard.

The new approach would involve trying to have the leadership declared vacant by petition, and follows a report on Tuesday by Fairfax Media that the campaign to force ministers to ''tap'' Ms Gillard on the shoulder had failed.
