Daniel Emerson looks at just who the Greens are:
Today is the day when the five new Greens Senators join their comrades in the Australian Senate [Ed: this piece was submitted to us a few days ago - sorry the delay in publication!]. No doubt, rolling out the Green carpet for their socialist buddies. I press to consider what they truly stand for; who exactly are this merry-band-of-hippies intending to shake up Australian politics? Consider how this may not be for the improvement of our nation. For a majority of people seem sheltered to the consequential dangers & considered racism bubbling beneath the surface while they are masquerading as an environmental group.
Bob Brown- The unashamed leader of these hoodlums- now famous from 'saving' our Franklin river, and no doubt crippling the Tasmanian logging industry in the process, rocketed into the Senate. Questionably, Brown is stationed on a deceitful platform; radicalism cloaked in environmentalism.
Christine Milne – Famous for fighting against the Pulp Mill in Tasmania (the first step in making paper and/or wood) and in sending jobs overseas (good job there Christine), is the deputy of this Party.
Rachel Siewert – Probably the most honest one, (in terms of representing the Greens constituency) as she is a self-confessed radical, vegetarian and hard core environmentalist. Enemy of the hard working and honest fisherman, and those who make any sort of living from the ocean, she is demanding a bigger expansion of the marine sanctuaries.
Scott Ludlam – Hard core anti-capitalist, and unabashed anti-nuclear and open anti-Semite, who supports a ban of all Australian ‘military’ equipment to Israel (note; under the Greens, the term military is VERY wide).
Sarah Hanson Young – The baby of the group, but no doubt the most ruthlessly ambitious, supports an open door policy on immigration and would have Australia without a border protection system. She also supports ending all off-shore and mandatory detention.
Adam Bandt- The once known representative of power companies in the Latrobe Valley, (since privatisation had occurred) is suddenly a Greens representative. He has amazingly back flipped and now wanting to take away their jobs by supporting the Gillard tyrannically imposed Carbon Tax.
Richard Di-Natale – This former Doctor, who swore a medical oath to do no harm, is now a Greens Senator. Seemingly, he forgot this oath and would now have drug injecting rooms set up on every street corner. It is here that heroin and needles could be handed out willy nilly as part of the Greens drug policy.
Lee Rhiannon- Bizarrely, this rep adopted her name from a mythical Welsh witch. Coming from a ‘proud’ socialist background and hard-core anti-Israel beliefs, she was instrumental in getting a Sydney council to pass an anti-Israel boycott.
Larissa Waters – This environmentalist lawyer steps straight into crucial Greens territory by appealing to the Party’s core; aiming to ban ALL coal mining in Australia & replace it with untested renewables.
Penny Wright – The joker of the crew whose favourite colour is apparently ‘happiness’, arrested at the 1983 Franklin River Blockade and confesses (jokes?) that she got her Green beliefs from MAD magazine.
We now have these people effectively running the Senate, but what does this mean for the hardworking everyday family. What does this mean for Joe the Plumber and Sue the Housewife? If you want a scary read that’s educating, refer to the policies of our newly elected (and some still sitting) Greens...
We know that they plan to impose a tax for living in the city, impose a new 5% tax for driving a 4WD, and increase the company tax rate to 33%. If put into action, their environmental policies alone would bankrupt Australia, and put more than 200,000 out of work and leading economists agree. Furthermore, it's known that the Greens hold a shamefully- hateful anti-Israel policy. Many of our fellow Australians would be utterly shocked and appalled by this if they were only to dig into the dirt of this policy.
Senator Brown recently came out and showed the Greens contempt for the political process by saying that if Tony Abbott becomes Prime Minister, the Greens would block all of the legalisation his Government put before the Senate.
Few people are aware that the Greens would stop all military personal from serving overseas. In doing so, the Greens would essentially kill the dreams of thousands of military cadets, and members, who might wish to proudly serve their country.
Furthermore, the Greens would abolish the ANZUS treaty, they would close ALL foreign military bases (slippery slope to the Greens naïve anti-military beliefs of shutting down ALL forms of military defence), and give our children as young as 15 or 16 the right to vote, not even out of high school yet!
And unfortunately, after all of that, it only gets worse for Australia if the Greens were in the logeThey would:
Hike up the Company Tax rate to 33%; (as previously mentioned)
Introduce road congestion charges;
Force family trusts to be taxed as companies;
Increase the cost of many imported cars;
Give unions more power in the workplace;
Abolish the Australian Building and Construction Commission;
Scrap the ANZUS treaty; (as previously mentioned)
Cut our Defence budget;
Close joint military bases and put an end to joint training exercises;
Close down Australia’s coal mining industry;
Stop mining exploration;
End the detention of illegal boat people arriving in Australia;
Allow illegal immigrants free and unfettered access to come and go as they please in the Australian community; and
Relax anti-terrorism laws in Australia.
Today is only day one of the new Senate, day one, and Bob Browns plans and lust for power is already trying to put into motion by the Green Caucus trying to vote in one of their own as Senate President.
This is only day one and they are trying to spread their Green poison like a weed and with these radicals on the loose we need to be ever vigilant as citizens.
Picture if you will a representation of Australian Politics, with playful boy & girl bickering in the sunshine (Tony Abbott & Julia Gillard) on a playground and the other children (Australian Public) watch on with amusement, now picture if you will, the playground bully entering as the clouds darker, who wants to come in change the way everything is run and enforce his utter totalitarian belief on the other Children (we all know who this is).
This is only a representation but it could be the way our system could be run if the Greens are able to run unchallenged and unchecked. The Greens say they mean well and peace (well unless you're from Israel) but we must keep our politicians in check, as they answer to the people, and not the other way around.
Daniel Emerson describes himself as a "conservative political commentator, tech junkie, social contributor and youth activist." Please note that this is an entry into our competition for aspiring young writers and should be read as such, and that the opinions expressed in this piece are those of the author alone.

Action on AGW is mainstream.
Any attempt to paint it as radical, just means your marganalising yourself out of the debate.
WAKE UP MH

If the greens do block all legislation, they would eventually force a double-dissolution election. Then they will be kicked out of parliament for good. Australia is starting to wake up to just how insane and radical these people are.

The errors of fact - The Greens wanting heroine injecting rooms on every corner, Bob Brown saying he'd block all legislation from PM Abbott (the article linked to said it was only the carbon tax) - are just as bad. It's a wonder why, given the piece is at a minimum four days old, these mistakes were not corrected. It doesn't speak well for the reputation of Menzies House.
There are many good reasons to be critical of the Greens but poor quality posts such as this will only hurt the cause of those that oppose them.

We've generally tried not to extensively edit posts that are part of the competition for young writers, so that they may be judged more accurately upon what was submitted to us. Most pieces go through considerable editing prior to publication, however, I tend to feel that in a contest that might make it a little unfair so we limited editing to just some of the more obvious errors.
With that being said, will take what you have said on board and will make a few further changes.

"If the greens do block all legislation, they would eventually force a double-dissolution election. Then they will be kicked out of parliament for good.
Be careful what you wish for -- the Greens have always wanted a double dissolution. Lower Senate quotas in a full DD mean more Greens, not fewer.
About the article, even though I generally agree with all the points I thought it was a bit over the top. They might get a few things through as compromises, but the major parties will stomp on them before they get too cocky.

Oh, i missed the bit about the competition. My bad.
As you were.

What utter drivel. There are valid points to be made about some of the less than ideal backgrounds of the greens and attacking the greens on policy issues themselves.
There's a very valid debate to be made about the Greens economic policies (as a libertarian their social policies are fairly inoffensive and quite mild to me, so that's neither here nor there) and some of the rusted on marxists that seem to have jumped into the party but to call into account Brown's integrity I think is a bit much, mate.
The only real anti-capitalist in the bunch would be Rhiannon, the rest are kind of murky third-wayers like most other people in politics, they just trend towards the nordic model.
You seem like a smart kid, I'm sure you can do better.

Also if the Liberals put anything related to legalisation forward if they took power I'd probably vote for them. Pity a slip of the finger leads to such a farcical statement.

Dan - how about you make some of those "valid points" :)
Posted by: Tim Andrews | July 7, 2011 at 01:51 PM
Hijacking? You wish. meanwhile, back in the real world, they were elected.

I think that Daniel has done very well. He has highlighted the agenda of the Greens and has a good knowledge of what the Greens Party stands for and what each of its Senators stands for. Environmentalism is not the Party's first priority so anyone who thinks so should look again. The Greens were elected on the premise that they were only environmentalists and could save the world, by some who did not read their real agenda. Yes, the environment is part but not the main part. Time will tell whether people will wake up to what the Greens are trying to do - their search for power & trying to ruin the good life we have, and have had, in Australia.

I think you missed the bit about the Greens collectivly holding black masses, drinking baby's blood and the new bill about to be passed which gives them your firstborn for medical experimentation.
I hope you are all starting work on your bunkers while canned food does not attract any carbon tax - off you go!

Mark, that'd make sense if we were going into the 2010 election. However, as we have seen from the Victorian (arguably the safest state for the greens outside of Tasmania) State Elections, the Greens have plateaued.
In other states with strong anti-labor sentiments (NSW and QLD) there's a stronger distaste for the greens, with them making no headway in the NSW election, and grim forcasts for them in the upcoming QLD election.
A double dissolution (right now at least) would give the libs what they want, a split vote amongst the left (that is, any green increase coming at the expense of labor seats), and disenfranchised voter swing their way. Whether there are more greens as a result would be somewhat irrelevant.

Action on AGW is mainstream hey!?!
That's why nobody got to vote on the carbon dioxide tax and every published opinion poll says it's a dud. You eco-fascist trolls always assume that any loony idea you have is mainstream. That's what happens when you only speak to people who sing the Internationale
Posted by: John Smith | July 7, 2011 at 03:05 PM
I wholeheartedly agree with the sentiments, however the article lacked credibility and is laced with generlaisations rather than supported by the facts which are very easy to find.
"every street corner" that kind of comment does not get support
Posted by: oldskool | July 7, 2011 at 04:38 PM
You may be right, though an increase in the number of Greens seats overall is their goal, since it guarantees extra funding & a small incumbency advantage. They're just as happy to get them at the ALP's expense.
I agree though that their support has plateaued. And neither major party will make the mistake of preferencing them again.
Posted by: Marksouth | July 7, 2011 at 04:49 PM
Daniel, you have made some good points here. Your article is well structured too.
Do watch the spelling and grammar though, but, having said that, I suggest that you not take much notice of someone who mentions "heroine injecting rooms on every corner" (obviously, anyone wishing to inject a heroine would need her permission first) and "Green Caucus trying to vote in one of their own" instead of "Green Caucus trying to vote in one of its own".
Misuse of singulars and plurals is frequently done by experienced writers who should know better.
A frequent clanger is in this form: "He is one of those people who is always late".
Keep up the good work Daniel. Looking forward to seeing more of your writing soon.

The Greens won 13% of the Senate vote and hold 12% of the seats.
This figure has been quoted at length.
Also pointed out many times is that the ALP and Coalition can team together to ignore the Greens whenever they want.
Fear mongering can only get you so far until someone points out facts.

Signedin is rolling ..yet again
Posted by: oldskool | July 8, 2011 at 09:02 AM
I'd like it if labor did preference them tbh.
The greens are a problem for labor now well and truely, since they present as an "alternative" to labor, instead of "the major parties" now.
