Pot-smoking environmentalists take note: Grass might not be green. A new study reveals that indoor marijuana production carries a shockingly large carbon footprint.
GOOD reports that Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory researcher Evan Mills, Ph.D., has released a surprising new independent report, “Energy up in Smoke: The Carbon Footprint of Indoor Cannabis Production.” Mills reports that indoor Cannabis production uses 1% of the nation’s entire electricity consumption. This comes to energy expenditures of $5 billion per year.
While 1% may not seem like a lot, the report claims that smoking one single Cannabis joint is equivalent to running a 100-watt light bulb for 17 hours. That Cannabis cigarette carries two pounds of CO2 emissions.
You can read the remainder of the huffington Post article here.
Not a lot of “Green” in smoking the “Green”.
So does that make Nimbin Australia’s no1 CO2 emissions emitter?

Speak without fear and Question with Boldness
Plenty of Lib supporters would happily work to decriminalise pot. We have better things to do than chase people for smoking a bit of weed. The main stumbling block to further progress in drug law reform is the fact that, to achieve it, people like us would have to work with economically illiterate, environmentally irrational, government-can-do-no-wrong types like yourself. So to save us the pain it's easier for us just to work the common ground with the conservatives and keep you retards in your box where you can't do too much harm. Things like drug law reform, abortion, the republic etc are the things we leave alone to preserve more important things like property rights, freedom of speech, reasonable taxes, realistic policy and a functional justice system. As the Australian constitution provides next to no rights to the citizenry this is pretty much has to be the Australian libertarian/classical liberal credo.

This site needs an open forum for stuff like this:
California Dreamin’—of Jobs in Texas
http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052748704570704576275051374356340.html?mod=googlenews_wsj
The contrast is undeniable. Texas has added 165,000 jobs during the last three years while California has lost 1.2 million. California’s jobless rate is 12% compared to 8% in Texas.
"You can't build in California, you can't manage in California and you have to pay a big tax," Mr. Puzder told the legislators. "In Texas, it's the opposite—which is why we're building 300 new stores there this year."
And just as Texas business leaders were testifying about how the state’s tort reforms had improved job creation, word came of California’s latest priority: On April 14, the state senate passed a bill mandating that all public school children learn the history of disabled and gay Americans.
Once we get a carbon tax you can just substitute Australia for California and Asia and South America for Texas. Because that's where the Australian jobs, the businesses and the investors will be going.

“Sounds like an argument to legalise production”? Yeah right Chris Johnson.
I know. LSD lollipops for kids too? They’d have less sugar content. You might want to peruse scientific brain scans before parroting off though.
In soft-on-drugs Holland pot smokers have big carbon footprints. But nice try. I’ll file your comment under bogan-related theology. Just ignore those brain scans.

I approve of medical Marijuana being grown under tight controls - it gives great relief for a wide range of chronic diseases, including cancer. However, I don't approve of illegal Marijuana because it leads to over use, in many cases it leads the user to more potent drugs and lastly - our local cops ate sick and tired of pulling up drivers high as kites on this stuff. It is also showing up in horrifc car accidents as a major cause of fatalities. Unfortunately we have people on this earth who think of NO ONE but themselves. It's always the innocent who pay for their utter disregard for others.

Oh, I laughed so much about this little snippet. I'm sure it was meant to be serious, but I mean to say ... I was a young man during the '60s and I can remember all these 'earth-mother' and 'Mr Natural' types claiming, evangelically, that 'the weed' was so environmentally friendly and a 'perfect, natural' product. (By the way, does any anyone know if "The Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers" comics are still in print or continued, they were actually a very funny take on the hippie era).
In my experience, weed smokers do not have the 'self-awareness' that their habit has has serious effects on their cognitive functions. Many a promising University student has 'bombed out' (literally) through intake of this noxious weed. I recall marking an undergraduate's paper on a fairly complex subject and when I discussed with him what he'd presented, I was able to point out the places where he had gone and 'had a smoke' to, in his view, clear his head. It was obvious he had lost his mental track and ended up producing gibberish. Keep drunks and dopers off our roads. No decriminalization - there's more than enough 'substances' of danger out there.

You are right in every respect Richard. I have had parrallel experiences.
All we need are dopers drivving cars and designing bridges and running the economy....Hang on I think the ALP is still in power isn't it ? Could explain some of the lunacy
Posted by: Account Deleted | April 24, 2011 at 12:18 PM
Chris - seriously now. Where is the responsibility of Marijuana smokers when it has a serious impact on innocent members of our society. How many families have to bury their relatives because of this dangerous substance. BTW - I think about alcohol & tobacco in the same manner. These substances are killing this country and costing the economy billions. I am a retired nurse.....I have seen the dreadful outcome of all these substances. Personal responsibility is something that is sadly lacking in this current generation. It's about time left wingers started to face up to the fact that it is their 'progressive' policies that are driving this culture. Conservatives place personal responsibility at the core of their beliefs....it's time your mob did likewise.

Yes you may have said Govts can do wrong but only right wing ones.
Your pretense at balance is pathetic.
May I suggest that you get a real job ?

I never learnt typing as a subject - I am sort of 'self taught'. I also have to wear glasses for reading, and identifying close objects. I can still see my food.....but it is blurry on the plate, lol, lol. Posters in forums boards should learn to make allowances for people. I wear percription glasses with special tinting for computer screens - that way I don't end up with a thumping headache.
I always make typos, and even spelling mistakes when I am mad as hell at a certain poster remarks. The one thing you won't see me do to any poster is ridicule their grammar or spelling - because you never know if that person is disabled, or has vision problems.
When people like Cressida, aka Jenny resort to attacking your posting skills you know they are desperately trying to deflect the issue and divert the debate.
Posted by: Lyn | April 24, 2011 at 01:06 PM
Hi Lyn Yes I know. These urban elits forget that we are self taught on computers and I have similar vision these day.
The assumption is that they will ridicule you and stop you thinking or posting.
The reds must be frightened with this step up recently.
Dont forget that Cressida has morphed into BeeBee now !

Further on the subject of marijuana - dear Mr Semple, are you regretting opening this can of worms? - the connection between Islamic terrorism and drugs is well established, and it is not a recent phenomenon. As a Semitic languages 'expert' (I still teach classical / Biblical Hebrew, and get by in Aramaic (Syriac), Arabic, Ethiopic and a few of the archaic (dead) languages such as Akkadian (used to be called 'Babylonian') and Phoenician (though modern day Maltese is a dialect of Phoenician, so not really 'dead'), I can inform you that the Arabic for assassin and hashish have more than a common root. In Arabic the word for 'assassin' "hash'shash" quite literally means 'hashish-eater'.
I'm aware of Israeli (and Russian) police post-mortem results on suicide bombers' remains that indicate they were 'high as kites'. Drugs are also a common find in terrorist 'hide-outs'. Perhaps these finds add another dimension to the expression 'Dutch courage'?
Posted by: Richard Joachim | April 24, 2011 at 02:42 PM
The root of the word is exactly as you say and it is a well known drug of choice in Islamic circles as it avoids the ptohibition of alcohol.
Long term use is known to cause paranoia and depression amongst other things.
Talking of mental disorders your friend DeeDee alias Cressida O is ranting again
Posted by: Account Deleted | April 24, 2011 at 02:52 PM
Richard Joachim: You’re right to point to drug use and terrorism links. Indeed, some of the Islamist violence in soft-on-pot Holland is associated with their selectively liberal culture too. They probably see us as purple aliens that need to zapped.
When drug-first libertarians equate pot with wine they’re probably high off their backsides too. They seem to confuse moderation with excess. While two wines a day are linked to high life expectancies (take some European Mediterranean regions), two bongs a day are associated with schizophrenia.
It’s hard to take these hippies seriously (even if some of them do wear suits). Western civilizations can flourish with a wine culture and have done so for hundreds of years. But hippies don’t do history. And they certainly don’t do brain scans.

The Taliban fund their operations via their poppy field crops. The US knows exactly what is going on, yet does little to do anything about it. Many of their soldiers too - are coming home addicted to heroin. It's as cheap as chips over there.
If the Yanks were serious they would fire bomb every crop in site....but they won't. They are trying to keep the poor on side.....poppy crops are their bread and butter. WE do indeed live in an upside down crazy world.

Vietnam went the same way when The North flooded the market with cheap heroin to sap the will to fight.
At home the Marxist loony leftist including many of obamas advisors rioted in the streets.
The US won the battle but lost the war to the radicals who now lead the USA.
Had to happen Lyn. Dont expect Obama to do anything. He is a leftists disci[ple

If we take the article at face value then the obvious solution is to grow marijuana outdoors in the sunlight instead of indoors under artificial light. So it seems that here is one more problem that can be attributed to prohibition.
Posted by: TerjeP | April 25, 2011 at 12:01 AM
Yep just take it outside and then grow the shit everywhere and lets all drive cars and fly planes and gave collisions like wow man...hey lets go and smoke some dope and then go to work and fall down a mine shaft or drive a forklift over someone...wow hey thats freedom man and Im like so creative now,,,,,sheeeeeet even Juliar looks good
