Last Friday, treasurer Bowen with finance minister Wong told the nation that Australia’s money matters were more about perception than reality. Things weren’t all that bad although declaring a virtual financial catastrophe—a Labor caused catastrophe. But, in that announcement there was something completely at odds with the Party’s behaviour pattern during the six years prior.
Every announcement during the Rudd/Gillard/Rudd regime has been sugar coated spin, fudging of numbers, obfuscation, and barefaced lies—has it not? Suddenly, on national television comes a confession, an admission of incompetence. That is uncharacteristic of the Labor Party we have come to know so well.
The world’s best treasurer, Wayne Swan, assured us from day one that surpluses were just around the corner—a corner that never came. In fact, Labor has not handed down a budget surplus in almost a quarter of a century. And now the latest deficit prediction is a shocker that grows each day.
